Along with the deepening of economic and political ties, the spatial expansion of the European Union assured the dominant role to this integration association in regional processes and significant impact on a global level. At different stages the EU enlargement process was determined by different motivations. After the fifth wave of enlargement in 2004, 2007 and 2013 further plans to increase the number of community members have been postponed indefinitely. Prospects and pace of this process remains uncertain. The European Neighbourhood Policy proposed by 136 the countries located in adjacent geographical areas with the EU as an alternative to EU membership was generally ineffective. In its turn, the crisis of the European security model caused by Russia’s policy towards Ukraine led to a significant rapprochement between the EU and the United States and the actual abandonment of further discussion of “the borders of Europe.”
