Dr. habil (History), Professor, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Kyiv, Ukraine.
Abstract. Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, which broke out on February 24, 2022, is a military and political crime against the Ukrainian people. In fact, this conflict has acquired a global scale, in which Ukraine stands to protect not only its freedom and independence but the entire free world. This large-scale, symbolic confrontation unfolded precisely from the annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea by the Russian Federation in 2014. It is likely that after the hard and bloody struggle, Ukraine’s territorial integrity restoration will end with the de-occupation of Crimea, the collapse of the Russian totalitarian regime, and possibly the disintegration of Russia. Obviously, all these processes will be organically interconnected. It is the seizure of Crimea began a new stage of Russian expansion in the post-Soviet space and Eastern Europe. Notably, Russia has moved from hybrid, hidden influences and sabotage to the annexation of sovereign states’ territories. Taking into account the above considerations, it is necessary to consider the history of Ukrainian Crimea as an organic part of the history of Ukraine, but in the context of European and global history.
To this end, the Center on the History of the Turkish and Crimean Tatar Peoples Studies of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of the Faculty of History of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University initiated to hold the second scientific seminar (webinar) «Crimea in the coordinates of history» on October 1, 2021, on the basis of the department. The event was organized in the support of the diplomatic initiative of Ukraine – the «Crimea Platform». In addition, the scientific seminar was held as part of educational programs development – «Oriental Studies» and «American and European Studies» (with advanced program in foreign languages).
Among the reports of the first section «Crimea in European / World history,» it should be noted the speeches of the leading Ukrainian experts in World history, first of all, from the Department of Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of the KNU Faculty of History. They include such speeches as «The problem of Crimea annexation by Russia in the common foreign policy of the European Union», «’ Defender’s’ operation in the geopolitical confrontation between Russia and the West», «Participation of NATO in solving the problem of Crimea de-occupation», «Position of the Republic of Türkiye on the Ukrainian Crimea annexation by the Russian Federation», «The factor of strategic cooperation with Russia in the foreign policy approaches of the PRC regarding Crimea (2014 to present)». The report of Professor Oleg Mashevskiy «The ‘Crimea Platform’ Forum – 2021: the problem of European and Northern American states’ participation» summarized the materials of this sectional meeting.
As part of the work of the second section – «Crimea in the history of Ukraine» – the main stages of the history of this Ukrainian region were covered in the context of Ukrainian history as a whole. In particular, it was captured in the following topics: Crimean Khanate as a country of high Islamic culture; some aspects of cooperation between Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars during the War of national liberation in the middle 18th century; the role of Ukrainians in the Crimean garrisons and the events on the peninsula in March-October 1917; participation of Crimean Tatars in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army on Volhynia; the Ukrainian liberation movement in Crimea during the World War II; the policy of budget financing of Crimea in 1950–1954 and changing its priorities after the transfer of the peninsula to Ukraine; the role of the Mejlis in the contemporary history of the Crimean Tatar people (1991–2021); activation of Russia’s hybrid war against Ukraine in Crimea, which had already unfolded in 2003-2008; militarization of the occupied Crimea as a threat to international security; militarization of the consciousness of the population in Crimea by the Russian Federation: directions, forms, and methods of work.
