Abstract. The participation of the Department of New and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in the seminar «Ukraine in the Geostrategy and Geopolitics of Great Britain», which took place on March 15, 2024 is highlighted. It is indicated that the Department co-organized this seminar and participated in it within the framework of the development of Bachelor’s degree program «American Studies and European Studies» (with in-depth study of foreign languages).

The relevance of the seminar is determined by the place and role of Great Britain in Ukrainian history and the present. It is important that Great Britain currently supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine, provides it with significant humanitarian and military-technical assistance during the Russian full-scale military aggression that began in 2022. Therefore, in his opening remarks, moderator Pavlo Hai-Nyzhnyk noted to the participants of the event that the main speakers of the seminar were invited specialists in «British questions».

During his speech, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Ambassador to the United Kingdom Vadym Prystaiko spoke about modern British-Ukrainian relations, the interests of the United Kingdom in Ukraine, as well as the assistance provided by the United Kingdom to Ukraine during the Russian-Ukrainian war. In turn, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ogryzko traced the influence of British-Russian relations on Great Britain’s policy towards Ukraine. In turn, Professor Oleg Mashevskyi revealed the historical origins of the formation of Great Britain’s «European policy» and also described the role of British scholar Halford Mackinder in the emergence and development of the science of «geopolitics».

A landmark event of the seminar was the presentation of P. Hai-Nyzhnyk’s monograph «Ukrainian National Conservatism: The Hetman Movement». A comparison of British and Ukrainian conservative societies was made. The participation of students of European historians in the seminar was notable. Each of the reports became the subject of active discussion. It is noteworthy that the initiator of the seminar was Associate Professor Oleh Kupchyk.
