UKRAINIANS IN AMERICA AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH CENTURY (BASED ON MATERIALS FROM THE NEWSPAPER «RADA»)

Abstract. The aim of the article is to reveal the features of the mass migration of Ukrainians to the American continent through the prism of materials from the newspaper «Rada» in 1907–1914. The research methodology is based on the principle of historicism and methods of historical source research. Using the methods of scientific and historical search, the author identified and selected from the materials of the newspaper «Rada» sources that relate to the causes, organization and implementation, and consequences of the migration of Ukrainians to the USA, Canada, and Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that materials from the newspaper «Rada» were introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, which concern the problems of Ukrainian migration to the American continent in 1907–1914.

Conclusions. In the article, through the prism of materials from the newspaper «Rada», reveals the peculiarities of the migration of Ukrainians to the American continent during 1907–1914. The information presented in the column «Ukrainians in America» was mostly prepared by the newspaper’s own correspondents. Some publications were reprints of information from immigrant printed publications. They concerned the migration of Ukrainians from Galicia and Ukrainians from the Dnieper region to America at the beginning of the 20th century.

In general, the newspaper’s materials discussed the socio-economic reasons for the migration of Ukrainians to America. It reported on the organized nature of migration in Galicia, and on the contrary, its disorganization in the Dnieper region. Journalists reported on the number of migrants and the gradual increase in their numbers. They wrote about problems in organizing and implementing a migration trip, as well as about salaries, living expenses, the amount of money that immigrants sent home, and the share of Ukrainians among migrants to America.

The newspaper’s editorial staff warned migrants about the financial crises in America and the resulting layoffs and salary cuts, as well as about the hard work in coal and iron ore mines. The articles also discussed the robberies and murders of migrants in Brazil.
